Our President's Message

Dear Sisters,

As we contemplate the Advent season, we hear a voice crying out in the desert, "Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight." Matt.3:3. Like John the Baptist, we too are called to be witnesses and precursors of Christ. The Savior is about to arrive and nobody notices. The world goes on as usual, completely oblivious.

Francis Fernandez in his Advent meditation book, In Conversation with God, believes that our responsibility to be Christ's witnesses implies we should first and foremost struggle to live our lives according to his doctrine. "We have to act in such a way that others will be able to say when they meet us: This woman is a Christian, because she does not hate, because she is willing to understand, because she is willing to make sacrifices, because she shows that she is a woman of peace, because she knows how to love."

Our family, friends, work mates and YLI Sisters, those people we come into contact with frequently, should be the first to benefit from our love for God. May the Holy Spirit, with peace of God's grace, increase our longing to gaze upon the Babe in a manger. And like our beloved Mother Mary, may we ponder Jesus' presence in our lives with a grateful heart.

Love and friendship,

Jennifer

~ YLI Bits and Pieces ~

Get Acquainted Night: Come join the fun and learn what you have in common with your YLI Sisters on January 27, 2005 at 7 p.m. at the home of Lidia Jimenez.

Synod Ratification Meeting: Some of our members served as hostesses when our parish hosted the last Synod meeting at 2:30 p.m. on January 9th in the Parish Hall. Those volunteering were Pat Everett, Leona Field, Pat Giertych, June McJunkin, Pat Ryan and Nita Singh Dhalliwal.

Please continue to remember in your prayers the faithfully departed of our parish and our deceased members, family and friends.

We wish our clergy, Fr. Manuel Soria and Fr. Roland, our Deacons, Eldon Vignery and Ruben Rojo, best wishes during the New Year 2005. Our prayers go with you in your many endeavors.

* Happy Birthday to our January Sisters *

THANK YOU…Jerry Himenes, Cille Ibbotson and Winnie Owen for making a beautiful Christmas quilt. The quilt raffle raised over $180. Cadie Jacenich (Jackie's daughter) is enjoying sleeping with it on her bed.

The Christmas party was a joyful occasion for the 35 ladies who attended. Thank you to Jackie Jacenich for sharing her spacious, holiday adorned home with us. Her daughter Cadie was a big help to the committee---helping with gifts, coats, purses and drawing the winning ticket for the Christmas quilt raffle. Of course, it's not Cadie's fault that she drew her mother's name! Thanks go out to Roberta Lomeli, Catherine Haynes and Nita Singh-Dhalliwal for helping behind the scenes.

The CHRISTMAS BASKET RAFFLE was a huge success. Over $2300 was raised for our Charities account. The Jubilee Burse donation to Bishop Weigand (in April) for seminarian aid is the largest expense from the account. Deacon Eldon Vignery graciously agreed to draw the winners at the Christmas party. President, Jennifer Martinez, was shocked speechless when Deacon Eldon drew her name for the first prize - the large food basket. Carla McGregor won the 2nd prize - the Nativity set. Ken Meyers won the small food basket. Mary Gomes won the Ruthy's Sunday Brunch for 2 gift certificates. Jennifer Perry won the afghan. All in all 12 YLI ladies won prizes. A special thanks goes out to 16 members who donated prizes. Once again your support and generosity made this event a memorable one. Thank you to the hard-working committee: Catherine Haynes, Carol Horning, Lidia Jimenez and Pat Ryan. As little Tiny Tim would say, "God bless us everyone."
