Hello to my St. Isidore Parish Family!

This is the end of my second week of vacation with my family in beautiful México. This is my first time in this part of the country, and also my first trip with my family as long as this one; we are fourteen members of the family traveling in three cars for three weeks. These are some of the more than 14 hundred pictures that I have already taken.

We started our trip on Tuesday, January the 20 in the State of Hidalgo, center part of the country, north Mexico City. We visited this cave named Tolantongo where a river comes out of the earth and joins this waterfall with this beautiful blue color.

From there we traveled to the State of Veracruz in the Gulf of Mexico. We stopped in Xalapa, the Capital, Wed, Jan 21. On the way, we had the opportunity to see the most famous volcanoes that can be seen from Mexico City, namely, Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl. The Third volcano is the highest peak in my country named: Pico de Orizaba with more than 18,000 feet. This can be seen from Xalapa, the State Capital of Veracruz. The picture from Xalapa is the Cathedral where they still have the body of one of the most recent canonized saints from Mexico: Saint Rafael Guizar y Valencia, Bishop of Veracruz in the 1930's.

On Thur, Jan 22 we went close to the end of the State of Veracruz to see this beautiful waterfall named: Salto de Eyipantla. Mel Gibson filmed here part of his movie Apocalypto.

Then we visited Coatzacoalcos in Veracruz, then Villahermosa, the Capital of the State of Tabasco, part of the Olmeca culture. (No pictures of these places). On Jan 24 we visited a beautiful colonial city, Campeche, Capital of the State with the same name. The picture is of its beautiful Cathedral at night.

Sunday, Jan 25, the Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul, we arrived to Merida, the Capital of the State of Yucatán in the peninsula with the same name, at the end of the Gulf of Mexico. The picture here is of the State Capitol.

On Monday, the 26th, we went to visit one of the New Modern Wonders of the World: Chichen Itzá, the pyramid that is beautiful. In one of the pictures, you can see me touching it as if it were a miniature, but is the real thing. Our last visit on this day we went to this cave with water as a swimming pool with this blue color due to the daylight that comes from a natural open on the celling; its name is K'kekén. There are many, many of these in the States of Yucatan and Quintana Roo) where Cancún is. They are called: Zenotes. They can be as big as a big river underground; beautiful caverns.

Today, Sunday, was the first day of our Mission in English. I pray that many people took advantage of the Spanish one, and now many more of our parishioners are enjoying this spiritual and full of grace time.

Next time I have the opportunity to connect to the Internet, I will send you more pictures of these places my family and I are enjoying. This week we have had a great time in the State of Quintana Roo, and tomorrow, Monday, we are heading to Chiapas and Oaxaca, States full of nature and history.

Este es el final de mi segunda semana de vacaciones con mi familia en el bello México. Es mi primera vez visitando esta parte del país y al mismo tiempo mi primer viaje tan largo con mi familia; somos 14 personas viajando en tres vehículos durante tres semanas. Estas son algunas de las más de 1,400 fotos que he tomado hasta el día de hoy.

Comenzamos nuestro viaje el martes 20 de enero en el Estado de Hidalgo, al centro del país, al norte de la ciudad de México. Visitamos esta cueva llamada Tolantongo donde sale un río de debajo de la tierra y se une a esta cascada de bello color azul.

De ahí nos fuimos al Estado de Veracruz en el Golfo de México. Pasamos un tiempo en la capital, Xalapa el miércoles 21. En el camino tuvimos la oportunidad de admirar al amanecer los famosos volcanes que se ven desde la ciudad de México, el Popocatépetl y el Iztaccíhuatl. La foto del tercer volcán es el más alto en mi país; se llama: Pico de Orizaba con 5,600 metros sobre el nivel del mar. Se puede ver desde Xalapa. Esta foto de Xalapa, nos muestra la Catedral donde aún se conserva el cuerpo de uno de los santos mexicanos canonizados más recientemente: San Rafael Guízar y Valencia, Obispo de Veracruz en los años 1930.

El jueves 22 fuimos cerca de la orilla del Estado de Veracruz para ver esta bella cascada llamada: Salto de Eyipantla. Mel Gibson filmó aquí parte de su película Apocalypto.

De ahí visitamos Coatzacoalcos en Veracruz, luego Villahermosa, la capital del Estado de Tabasco, parte de la cultura Olmeca. (No hay fotos de estos lugares). El 24 de enero visitamos una bella ciudad colonial: Campeche, capital del Estado del mismo nombre. La foto nos muestra la bella catedral de noche.

El domingo 25, fiesta de la Conversión de San Pablo, llegamos a Mérica, la capital del Estado de Yucatán en la península que lleva su nombre, al final del Golfo de México. La foto es del Palacio de Gobierno.

El lunes 26 fuimos a visitar una de las Nuevas Maravillas del Mundo Moderno: Chichén Itzá, la pirámide que es muy bella. En una de las fotos, me pueden ver tocándola como si fuera una miniatura, pero es la verdadera pirámide; efecto especial de la fotografía. Nuestra última visita este día fue a un Cenote, una bella alberca subterránea con agua de color azul debido a la luz de día que penetra a través de una apertura en el techo de la cueva.; se llama X'kekén. Hay muchos Cenotes en los Estados de Yucatán y Quintana Roo donde se encuentra Cancún. Los Cenotes pueden ser tan grandes como todo un río subterráneo; son cavernas muy bellas.

Hoy domingo fue el primer día de nuestra Misión en Inglés. Pido a Dios que muchas personas hayan aprovechado la Misión en Español y ahora muchos de nuestros feligreses estén disfrutando este tiempo lleno de gracia y espiritualidad.´

La próxima vez que tenga oportunidad de conectarme al Internet, enviaré más fotos de los lugares que mi familia y yo estamos disfrutando. Esta semana estamos disfrutando mucho de Quintana Roo, y mañana, lunes, nos iremos rumbo a Chiapas y Oaxaca. Estados llenos de naturaleza e historia.

Good morning,

Thank you for posting the pictures and the information on my trip. This is the second part of the pictures that I have to send you that includes the places we visited yesterday, Sunday, Feb 1.

We arrived to our farthest destination, Cancún, on Mon, Jan 26 at night. First thing on Tuesday morning, we went to the beach to see the sunrise; the next picture shows you the beauty of the green and blue Caribean Sea; then you see my nephews playing on the beach having a great time under the sun. The last pictures from Cancún are seagulls on flight but on the second picture, my brother Mario is giving them potato chips from his hand.

In front of Canún there is an island called: Isla Mujeres (Women Island) with the same beauty of the whole Caribean; we visited the island on Wednesday the 27th. The next day, Thu 28th, we travelled south to Playa del Carmen, a nice small beach town; the pictures from here are also sunrise and the golden sand with the first daylight.

On Saturday we went to enjoy the water, sun, and sand of this beautiful place called Akumal following our way south through the State of Quintana Roo. On Sunday, February 1, after participating in the Mass already in the town of Tulum, we went to visit this marvelous ruins of the Mayan culture along the beach in the Caribean Sea as you can admire in these pictures. This place is really very close to Paradise where Adam and Eve spent the first part of their lives in this world.

In the last picture I show you these four generations: my parents Francisco & María Luisa; their sons, my brother Mario and me; their grandsons, my nephews Francisco and Fernando, and their fourth great-granddaughter Yaretsi.

From our journey, I skipped Friday, Jan 30 purpousely. On that day we visited the beautiful place called Xcaret. I am preparing several of the many pictures I took there to share with you on my next message.

Today, Monday, Feb 2, the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, we travelled 320 miles, two thirds of our journey to our next stop in the ruins of Palenque in the State of Chiapas. By the Grace of God, we will be there tomorrow morning.

Buenas dias,

Esta es la segunda parte de las fotos que tengo para enviarles de los lugares que visitamos ayer, domingo 1º de febrero.

Por fin llegamos a nuestro destino más lejano, Cancún el lunes 26 de enero por la noche. Lo primero que hicimos el martes por la mañana fue ir a la playa a ver el amanecer; la siguiente foto les muestra la belleza del verde y azul del Mar Caribe; después ven a mis sobrinos jugando en la playa disfrutando el sol caribeño. Las últimas fotos de Cancún son las gaviotas volando y en la segunda, es mi hermano Mario dándoles de comer papas fritas de su propia mano.

Frente a Cancún, está la bella Isla Mujeres con la misma belleza de todo el Caribe; visitamos la isla el miércoles 27. El día siguiente, jueves 28, viajamos hacia el sur a Playa del Carmen, un bello pueblo a la orilla del mar; las fotos de este lugar son también del amanecer y de la playa dorada con los primeros rayos del día.

El sábado fuimos a disfrutar del agua, el sol y la arena del bello lugar llamado Akumal siguiendo rumbo al sur a través del Estado de Quintana Roo. El domingo 1º de febrero, después de asistir a la Santa Misa ya en Tulum, visitamos estas maravillosas ruinas de la cultura Maya al lado de laq playa en el Mar Caribe, como pueden admirar en estas fotos. Este lugar se parece muchísimo a lo que sería el Paraíso donde Adán y Eva pasaron la primera parte de sus vidas en este mundo.

En la última foto les muestro estas cuatro generaciones: mis papás Francisco y María Luisa; sus hijos, mi hermano Mario y yo; sus nietos, mis sobrinos Francisco y Fernando, y su cuarta biznieta Yaretzi.

De nuestro viaje me brinqué el viernes 30 a propósito. Ese día visitamos el bello lugar llamado Xcaret. Estoy preparando unas fotos de las muchas que tomé ahí para compartir con ustedes en mi siguiente mensaje.

Hoy, lunes 2 de febrero, la Fiesta de la Presentación del Señor, viajamos 500 kilómetros, dos terceras partes de nuestro viaje al próximo destino en las ruinas de Palenque en el Estado de Chiapas. Con la ayuda de Dios, allá estaremos mañana por la mañana.

Que el Señor les bendiga siempre y continúen disfrutando de nuestra Misión parroquial.

Good evening,

The pictures attached to this message are from a beautiful place south Cancún that offers nature during the day, and this musical show that describes the life of the Mayans to the birth of the new nation, the Mestizo race that offers unique music and dances in each of the 32 States, which make the country of Mexico today. We visited Xcaret on Friday, Jan 30.

In the pictures today you can see the entrance to the park Xcaret, and the customs and life of the Native Mayans. Then you see the Spanish arriving, the fighting, then the conversion to Christianity. The pictures that follow are from some of the States of Mexico. You can see the difference in dresses, and when you see the show, you can hear the difference in music and rhythms. I hope you can enjoy these pictures, and if you have the opportunity to come to this part of Mexico, enjoy it live!

Buenas tardes,

Las fotos de este mensaje son de un bello lugar al sur de Cancún que ofrece espectáculo natural durante el día y un show musical que describe desde la vida de los Mayas hasta el nacimiento de una nueva nación, la raza Mestiza que ofrece música y bailes únicos en cada uno de los 32 Estados que conformal el México de hoy. Estuvimos en Xcaret el viernes 30 de enero.

En estas fotos pueden ver desde la entrada del parque y los trajes típicos de los Indios Mayas. Después se ve la llegada de los Españoles y la conquista; a ello le sigue la conversión al cristianismo. Las fotos que siguen son de algunos de los Estados de México. Se puede admirar la diferencia de los trajes típicos, pero cuando ves el show, puedes oir la diferencia de su música y ritmos. Espero que disfruten estas fotografías, y si algún día tienen la oportunidad de visitar esta parte de México, lo puedan disfrutar en vivo.

Now I am sending pictures of our visit to the State of Chiapas, the farthest south State at the border with Guatemala in Central America. This is a State also very rich in nature and ruins and culture; still part of the Mayan culture together with Yucatán and Quintana Roo. Actually, Palenque, the first ruins we visited in Chiapas, is the Classic Era of the Mayan culture around the sixth and seventh centuries. The Mayans abandoned the area and moved north towards the places we already visited in Tulum and Chichén Itza; that is the Post Classic period between the 10th and 12th centuries.

We arrived to Chiapas on Tuesday, Feb. 3. The ruins in Palenque that can be visited are just 5% of the total of the Mayan city at that time. We see temples and the castle where the king used to live. Enjoy the view.

Very close to Palenque we spent the evening and night at the cabins close to the waterfall called Misol-Ha. It is an Indian name that I do not know the meaning. You can walk behind the waterfall. It is beautiful.

The following day, wednesday, my family and I went to visit this beautiful waterfall called: Agua Azul (Blue Water); that is usually the color of the water, but because it was raining two days before, we were not able so see it, but you can admire the way the river is increasing in the falls until the wonderful big waterfall before becoming a peaceful river.

We ended our day arriving into San Cristóbal de las Casas, a beautiful colonial town in the midst of the Chiapas jungle at an altitude of 7,000 feet above see level. The first picture is the Cathedral of St. Christopher; the next two are just streets in town. The fourth picture is the beautiful Santo Domingo Church (St. Dominic); and the last one is the City Hall.

On Thursday, Feb. 5, we went south to visit this wonderful waterfall called El Chiflón, the sound that the wind makes blowing. It is big and very impressive. From there we went to see two of the many lakes called Lagos de Montebello (Lakes of Mount Beautiful) just at the border with Guatemala. The water is green and blue, but due to a cloudy day and a broken car, we were not able to enjoy them at all.

Then we went to the center of the State to this old city called Chiapa de Corso at the shore of the Grijalva River. What you can see in the picture is a fountain built in the year 1,567, a few years after the arrival of the conquerors. In that place we took a small boat to visit the wonderful Cañón del Sumidero, one of the Natural Wonders of Mexico. The river runs through this canyon where the highest point goes up to 3,000 feet. It is more that 300 kilometers long, and you can see some of its inhabitants.

We spent the night at the State Capital, Tuxtla Gutiérrez, a prosperous city that every night offers traditional music played with their Marimba in the main plaza for the visitors to enjoy listening to it or dancing following the nice rhythm.

Ahora les envío fotos de nuestra visita al Estado de Chiapas, el más lejano al sur del país frontera con Guatemala en Centro América. Este es un Estado muy rico en naturaleza, ruinas y cultura; es también parte de la cultura Maya junto con Yucatán y Quintana Roo. De hecho, Palenque, las primeras ruinas que visitamos en Chiapas, corresponden al período clásico de los mayas alrededor de los siglos sexto y séptimo. Los mayas abandonaron esta región y se mudaron al norte hacia los lugares que ya visitamos: Tulum y Chichén Itzá; en estos lugares se vivió el período pos clásico entre los siglos 10 y 12.

Llegamos a Chiapas el martes 3 de febrero. Las ruinas en Palenque que se pueden visitar, representan sólo el 5% del total de la ciudad maya en su tiempo. Vimos varios templos y el castillo donde vivía el rey. Disfruten las vistas.

Muy cerca de Palenque, pasamos la tarde y la noche en las cabañas al lado de la cascada llamada Misol-Ha. Es un nombre nativo del que desconozco el significado. Se puede caminar detrás de la cascada la cuál es muy bella.

Al día siguiente, miércoles, mi familia y yo fuimos a visitar las bellas cascadas de Agua Azul; usualmente ese es el color del agua, pero como había llovido en días anteriores, no nos fue posible verla así; pero sí se puede admirar la forma como el río va incrementando las caídas hasta convertirse en la bella cascada de la última foto antes de convertirse en un pacífico río.

Terminamos nuestro día al llegar a San Cristóbal de las Casas, un bello pueblo colonial en medio de la selva chiapaneca con una altitud de 2,210 metros sobre el nivel del mar. La primera foto es de la Catedral de San Cristóbal; las dos siguientes son de las bellas calles del pueblo. La cuarta fotografía es del bello templo de Santo Domingo, y la última es de la Presidencia Municipal.

El jueves día 5, fuimos más al sur a conocer la magnífica cascada llamada El Chiflón, conocida así por el chiflido que hace el aire al pasar por ese cañón. Es muy impresionante. De ahí nos fuimos a conocer dos de los muchos bellos Lagos de Montebello de color verde y azul que no pudimos apreciar bien por ser un día nublado y que se descompuso la camioneta que nos llevaba. Ya podíamos ver los cerros de Guatemala.

Al día siguiente nos fuimos al centro del Estado, a esta antigua ciudad de Chiapa de Corso en la orilla del río Grijalva. Lo que se ve en la foto es una muy vieja fuente construida desde 1,567, unos años después de la llegada de los conquistadores. En este lugar tomamos una barca que nos llevó a visitar el maravilloso Cañón del Sumidero, una de las maravillas naturales de México. El río corre por el cañón por más de 30 km. Y uno de los puntos más altos tiene mil metros de alto. Aquí pueden ver algunos de los habitantes del cañón. Pasamos la noche en la capital del Estado, Tuxtla Gutiérrez, una próspera ciudad que todas las noches ofrece música tradicional de marimba en la plaza del mismo nombre donde los visitantes pueden disfrutar escuchando la música o bailando a su bello ritmo.

Part 5

February 10 & 11

The last State we visited was Oaxaca. This is a place very rich in history and culture. There are still many Native Indians in Oaxaca, mainly Mixtecos and Zapotecos. We can find still many ruins and now beautiful Colonial cities like Oaxaca, the State Capital. Tradition is very important in this area of Mexico; during the month of July, the main seven regions of the State come together to share their music, dances, arts and crafts and the big variety of delicious meals. The feast is called “Lunes del Cerro”, Monday at the Hill, and it is known around the world; thousands of visitors from many countries enjoy it yearly.

The first place we visited in Oaxaca was Bahias de Huatulco, seven little bays already in the Pacific Ocean with their own beauty and deep Blue Ocean. Close to Huatulco is an old village at the beach also, Puerto Angel built on the hill. We had the opportunity to see the rising of the full moon above the little Church. We went on a little boat to the open sea and were able to play with a sea turtle.

We finally left the beaches after traveling along the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea and lastly the Pacific Ocean. We drove six hours up in the mountains through the Sierra de Oaxaca towards the State Capital. We spent one night at these cabins in the middle of the sierra, a nice experience being close to Mother Nature.

Our last stop was the colonial city of Oaxaca. In the pictures you can see the magnificent Cathedral and the Blessed Sacrament Chapel within it. The third picture of Oaxaca is the side door of the Cathedral looking towards the plaza. The fourth picture is the entrance to the Institute of Science, and the last four pictures are from Saint Dominic Church, one of the most magnificent churches in Mexico built in the seventeen hundreds. At this time the church is being restored after almost a total destruction at the end of the 19th century.

We ended our adventure after 22 days and 3, 575 miles travelling through beautiful Mexico and came back home very happy and with our mind and heart full of memories!

Febrero 10 y 11

El último Estado que visitamos fue Oaxaca. Es un lugar muy rico en historia y cultura. Aún hay muchos indígenas nativos por aquí, principalmente Mixtecos y Zapotecos. Se encuentran muchas ruinas así como bellas ciudades coloniales como la Capital Oaxaca. La tradición es muy importante en esta región de México; durante el mes de julio se celebra el “Lunes del Cerro”, cuando las principales siete regiones del Estado se reúnen a compartir su música, bailes, trajes típicos, artesanías y deliciosos platillos. Esta fiesta es bien conocida mundialmente; miles de visitantes de muchos países se dan cita cada año para disfrutarla.

El primer lugar que visitamos en Oaxaca fueron las Bahías de Huatulco, siete bellas bahías ya en el Océano Pacífico con su mar azul intenso. Cerca de Huatulco está el antiguo pueblito de Puerto Ángel enclavado en el cerro donde nos tocó ver salir la luna llena por encima de su pequeña Iglesia. Por la tarde fuimos en una langa a alta mar y tuvimos la oportunidad de jugar con una tortuga marina.

Por fin dejamos las playas después de haber viajado a lo largo del Golfo de México, el Mar Caribe y finalmente el Océano Pacífico. Viajamos durante seis horas por las montañas entre la Sierra de Oaxaca hacia la capital. Pasamos una noche en estas cabañas en medio de la sierra, una bella experiencia de contacto con la Madre Naturaleza.

Nuestra última parada fue la ciudad colonial de Oaxaca. En estas fotos pueden ver la magnífica Catedral y su capilla del Santísimo Sacramento. La tercera foto nos muestra una de las puertas laterales que mira a la plaza. La cuarta fotografía es la fachada del Instituto de Ciencias de Oaxaca. Y las últimas cuatro fotos son de la Iglesia de Santo Domingo, una de las más bonitas Iglesias de México construida en el siglo XVIII. En estos momentos está siendo restaurada después de una casi total destrucción al final del siglo XIX.

¡Terminamos nuestra aventura después de 22 días y 5,750 km. viajando a través del bello México y volvimos a casa muy felices cargados de bellos recuerdos!
