"On the Road"
with
Deacon Eldon and Bev Vignery

| On October 5, 2007, after many years with the Yuba County Sheriff's Department our Deacon Eldon Vignery retired from service to our communities. The week after retirement they "hitched up the old wagon" (a travel trailer) and Eldon and his wife Bev began a deserved vacation. They should be back soon. As requested by all of us in the parish community of St. Isidore, they are sending us e-mails along the way to fill us in with their travels. These are below. |

Hello from Rawlins, WY. We've stayed in Winnemucca, NV, West Wendover, NV, and Park City, UT. Weather has been pretty good so far - a little rain, some winds, and kind of cold. Seems like we are "in-between" storms. We've traveled no more than 5 to 6 hours each day. Tomorrow we head to Cheyenne which is just a little over 2 hours away. We love northeast Utah and Wyoming; the fall colors are beautiful. Stopped at a rest stop in Evanston, WY and saw a small herd of bison. Well, it's "Happy Hour" at the Vignery's Villa. Love to all. Pray for us in our travels. Eldon & Bev |
It's Wednesday, October 24th and we are in Fremont, Nebraska. Weather has been cool, about 60. Bev and I are really enjoying our trip in the trailer. Please let everyone know the Bev and I miss our family at St. Isidore and are looking forward to seeing everyone again. Love to all: |

October 31, 2007 We left Fremont, NE, last Sunday the 28th. Had a great visit with the kids and were able to spend our granddaughters 12th birthday with her. First birthday with her in 5 years. Great. From Fremont we traveled to a KOA in Gothenburg, NE. From there we stopped in Castle Rock, CO., which is about half way between Denver and Colorado Springs. We have spent two days and three nights here. Our grandson, Andrew, (who is now 22 !) visited us here and spent a night with us. It was so good to see him again. Some of our parishioners may remember him as a little boy we used to bring to church many years ago. During our stay, we went into Colorado Springs and visited a beautiful spot called 'Garden of the Gods' located just below Pike's Peak. And it is a spot that is truly a garden of God. From there we went to the Indian cliff dwellings in Manitou. Unbelievable site. It's hard to think that people lived in this type a community. Weather has been beautiful but very cold. From here we are heading to Las Vegas, NM and Las Cruces, NM, then on to Tucson, AZ. Really enjoying our trip, but miss home and all our friends and family at St. Isidore. Love to all, |

Wednesday, November 7, 2007 Hello everyone: Today is Wednesday, November 7th and we are in Yuma, Arizona. Our trip through New Mexico wasn’t as exciting as some of the other states, due to our overnight stops and the lack of time. There was nothing around us in either Las Vegas or Las Cruses, New Mexico. The only item of interest was that part of the way we traveled on the old Santa Fe Trail. |

We arrived in Tucson, AZ. on Saturday the 3rd. That evening, we attended Mass at St. Rita in the Desert parish. Very active parish. The pastor there is Father Robert Wicht, SDS, who is going to be transferred to some parish in Northern California. We spent time with him talking about our Bishop Quinn. He knows him very well and is going to miss him. We agreed with him when he described him as a saint here on earth. |
| Our main reason for staying in Tucson for three days was to spend time with Bev’s Aunt, whom we have not seen in close to thirty years. Very good visit. On Sunday, they took us to San Xavier del Bac Mission. This is an active Indian Mission, and has services during the weekdays and 4 services on Sundays. After there they took us to the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. They not only have over 1200 plant species, but 330 animals from the region. Very interesting tour. On our way back to town they took us through the Saguaro National Park. | ![]() |

On Monday, Bev and I drove to the original Old Town of Tombstone. We spent the whole day there. Just the idea of walking on the same streets or sitting in one of the saloons that Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, or the Clanton gang once frequented, took us back in time. We were unable to get into the OK Corral; however when we went to Boot hill, we saw the graves of those killed in that infamous gun battle. All the Clanton gang was buried together. |
| Yesterday, we traveled to Yuma. Today we visited the old “Yuma Territorial Prison.” What a life those people had. Out in the middle of nowhere and hot. Six men to a cell, which is only approximately 8x12 feet. They had to build the prison themselves and make all of those materials. | ![]() |

Leaving there we took a drive over the “Ocean to Ocean Bridge.” This bridge, in the 30’s, linked the East coast with the West coast. Prior to that, everyone had to use a ferry to cross the Colorado River. We head out tomorrow for Pio Pico near San Diego and should be home around the 14th. The Travelers: Bev and Eldon |
Hello everyone: Had a great time in San Diego. Went on a tour of the USS MIDWAY. Big Ship. Really enjoyed it. They had a log of the Vets, who were on the ship at one time or another, explaining life on board. Great Guys. It's Monday and we are currently in a 1000 trails park just outside of Riverside. We are just going to take it easy and leave here on Wedneday. On our way home we will spend one night in Bakersfield and home this Thursday. Looking forward to seeing everyone again. Love from Riverside. Eldon & Bev. |
