The Readings in Liturgy (1)

Generally, when we celebrate a Sacrament, there is one or more Readings. A fact is that they all are taken from the Holy Scripture, the Bible. Is there any order in the Readings at Church? Indeed, there is. If you go to Church EVERY Sunday during three consecutive years, you would have heard almost the entire Bible. Moreover, if you attend Church on weekdays during two years, you would have heard it also.

On Sundays we hear three Readings plus a Psalm; generally one from the Old Testament, the Responsorial Psalm, one Reading from the Letters in the New Testament, and the main one: the Gospel that tells about what Jesus said an did.

On the occasion of a Feast or Solemnity there are especial readings that talk about what we are celebrating. For the Sacraments: Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Anointing, Marriage and Ordination, there are special readings as well.

The purpose of the Readings is to help people to dig deeper into the mystery of Christ and His Church, and into the relationship between God and humankind.

Remember that when the Word of God is proclaimed, it is God talking directly to each one of us; the reader lends his/her voice to God to talk to His people.

Las Lecturas en la Liturgia (1)

Generalmente cada vez que celebramos un Sacramento, se leen de una a tres lecturas. Es un hecho que todas son tomadas de la Sagrada Escritura, es decir, de la Biblia. ¿Las Lecturas en la Iglesia tienen algún orden? Por supuesto que sí. Si asistimos a Misa TODOS los domingos durante tres años consecutivos, habremos escuchado casi toda la Biblia entera. Además, si asistimos a Misa en los días entre semana durante dos años, la habremos escuchado de igual manera.

Los domingos escuchamos tres Lecturas más el Salmo; se toma generalmente una lectura del Antiguo Testamento, el Salmo Responsorial, una lectura de las Cartas en el Nuevo Testamento y por último la lectura más importante: el Evangelio que nos habla de lo que Jesús dijo e hizo.

Cuando se celebra una Fiesta o Solemnidad, se toman lecturas especiales que nos narran dicha fiesta. En los Sacramentos: Bautismo, Confirmación, Eucaristía, Unción de Enfermos, Matrimonio y Orden Sacerdotal, todas tienen sus lecturas propias.

El propósito de las Lecturas es ayudar al pueblo a profundizar en el misterio de Cristo y su Iglesia, y en la relación entre Dios y la humanidad.

Recuerden qu cuando se proclama la Palabra de Dios, es Dios mismo que nos habla personalmente a cada uno; a su vez, el lector presta su voz a Dios para que le hable a su pueblo.
