The Colors in Liturgy

The colors used in the vestments (Chasuble and Stole) by the priest during the celebrations in Church are not according to the Priest’s own mood or decision; he cannot choose the color of his preference.

There are rules in the Catholic Church about the use of the colors in Liturgy. Those colors should be the same for the ornaments and for the altar as well.

During Advent (4 weeks), and Lent (40 days), times of prayer and penance, the color Purple is used. During the joyful times of Christmas (2 or 3 weeks), and Easter (7 weeks), the color used is White.

On the Solemnities and Feasts of Jesus and Mary, the color used is White, which is used as well on the Feasts and Memorials of the Saints that had a natural death. Also, the color Blue can be used on the feasts of Mary.

However, on the solemnities, feasts and memorials of the Martyrs, the color that is always used always is the color Red. This same color is used on Pentecost and the Masses for the Holy Spirit.

The rest of the year when there is no special celebration, is called the Ordinary Time (34 weeks), and the color used is Green.

Los Colores en la Liturgia

El color de los ornamentos (Casulla y Estola) que utiliza el sacerdote durante las celebraciones en la Iglesia no es de acuerdo a su gusto o libre albedrío; el padre no puede escoger o utilizar el color que más le guste.

Hay reglas en la Iglesia Católica que norman el uso de los colores en la liturgia. Incluso dichos colores deberían ser los mismos tanto en los ornamentos como en el altar, al menos.

En los tiempos de Adviento (4 semanas) y Cuaresma (40 días) que son de penitencia y espera, se utiliza el color morado. En los tiempos alegres de Navidad (2 ó 3 semanas) y Pascua (7 semanas) se utiliza el color blanco.

En las solemnidades y fiestas de Jesús y María se utiliza también el blanco, al igual que en las fiestas y memorias de los santos que murieron de muerte natural. En las fiestas de María se puede utilizar también el azul.

Pero en las  solemnidades, fiestas y memorias de los Santos mártires, siempre se utiliza en color rojo. Este mismo color se utiliza en las Misas de Pentecostés, del Espíritu Santo. Todos los demás días del año que no tienen celebración especial, conforman el Tiempo Ordinario (34 semanas) y se utiliza el color verde.
