The Baptism (2)

Bringing the new born baby to be baptized in the Church gives the parents and godparents a great responsibility. Just raising the child is in itself a big one! After asking for the name to be given to the child, the deacon or priest asks the key question to the parents and godparents: “Do you accept the responsibility of training him/her in the practice of the faith, keeping God’s commandments as Christ taught us, by loving God and our neighbor?

The response that we get all of the time is: I DO!

With sadness I have to admit that many times this is not a sincere response because we do not see them frequently in Church on Sundays. Then, when the time comes to prepare the children for their First Communion, it is very common to see that they do not know how to make the sign of the Cross or how to pray. That only means two sad things:

• The parents forgot their commitment on the day of the Baptism and did not teach them to pray.
• The parents themselves do not pray, because the children imitate everything they see at home.

If you are a parent or godparent, it is time to renew, reinforce, or fulfill your responsibility with your godchildren.

El Bautismo (2)

Al traer al nuevo bebé a bautizar en la Iglesia les da un gran compromiso a padres y padrinos. El simple hecho de criar al niño es una gran responsabilidad en sí. Después que el diácono o sacerdote les pregunta por el nombre que van a dar al niño, se les hace la pregunta clave: “¿Están dispuestos a aceptar la responsabilidad de educarlo en la fe, para que sepa guardar los mandamientos divinos que son Amar a Dios y a su prójimo como Cristo nos enseñó?”

Y la respuesta siempre es: SÍ ESTAMOS DISPUESTOS.

Con tristeza tengo que admitir que muchas veces la respuesta no es sincera porque no los vemos frecuentemente en la Iglesia los domingos. Y luego, cuando llega el tiempo de traerlos a la doctrina, es muy común ver que los niños no saben ni rezar, ni siquiera persignarse. Ellos solo significa dos cosas muy tristes:

• Que a los papás se les olvidó el compromiso del día del bautismo y no los enseñaron a rezar.
• Que los padres tampoco rezan en casa, porque los niños imitan todo lo que ven a sus padres hacer.
