Father Meskenas was a resident of the Yuba-Sutter area for the past 25 years and celebrated Masses at St. Isidore Parish in Yuba City and St. Joseph Parish in Marysville, since that time, getting to know many parishioners in the area. Of late, he was residing at Live Oak manor Nursing Home in Live Oak.

Father Meskenas was "a very personable priest and very much supportive of our diocese when he lived here in retirement," Bishop Quinn said. "I looked on him as one of our own priests, not even thinking of him as a priest of another diocese. He was a very private person, but very well known in Yuba City and Marysville. "People appreciate it when they meet a priest like Father Meskenas, because of his calmness, his serenity and tranquility, he was very helpful and brought comfort to many people," the Bishop added. "As a chaplain in the Air Force, he brought comfort and sanity to the insanity of war and in all these ways he served God and the people."

Some 15 Diocese Priests attended the funeral Mass, where Father Meskenas also received full military honors, including Msgr. James Murphy, vicar general, and Father Godwin Xavier, pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Marysville, Fr. Francisco pastor of St. Isidore Parish in Yuba City, Fr. Bong Rojas past pastor and Fr. In addition, he was clothed in his original ordination vestments that his mother had hand sown for him at that time, almost 61 years ago.
